The Benefits of Aleppo Soap: What It Really Does for Your Skin

Aleppo soap derives its benefits from just two ingredients: olive oil, which nourishes the skin and helps restore its hydrolipidic film, and bay laurel oil, which purifies and soothes. It cleanses without stripping, is suitable for the whole family, and can replace several hygiene products on its own.

Where do Aleppo soap's benefits come from?

A genuine Aleppo soap contains only four elements: olive oil, bay laurel oil, vegetable soda, and water. No synthetic fragrances, no preservatives, no foaming agents. This simplicity is not a marketing argument: it explains Aleppo soap's tolerance on reactive skin, as there is almost nothing in it for the skin to react to.

Olive oil: nourish and protect

It forms the base of the soap, ranging from 65% to 100% depending on the variety. Rich in fatty acids and vitamin E, it deeply nourishes and helps restore the hydrolipidic film, the natural barrier that conventional shower gels weaken. This gives Aleppo soap its superfatting feel and the sensation of softness after rinsing, rather than tight skin.

Bay laurel oil: purify and soothe

This is the ingredient that distinguishes Aleppo soap from all other soaps, including Marseille soap. Rich in fatty acids and natural antiseptic agents, laurel oil purifies, soothes itching, and limits bacterial proliferation. Its concentration determines the soap's character: the higher the percentage, the more purifying the soap.

Cave drying: what changes everything

After cauldron cooking and stamping, the blocks dry naturally for many months. This aging lowers the soap's pH and concentrates its properties. It also produces the visual signature of an authentic Aleppo soap: golden brown on the outside, emerald green at its heart. A soap sold too young is more aggressive – patience is part of the formula.

Benefits according to your skin type

Aleppo soap does not act the same way on all skin types. The laurel percentage is the slider that adapts its benefits to your profile.

Your Skin What Aleppo Soap Provides Adapted Range
Dry, sensitive or reactive Deeply nourishes, cleanses gently, helps soothe tightness and discomfort Pure Olive
Normal to combination Gently cleanses daily, respects natural balance, can be used on face and body 20% Laurel
Oily or blemish-prone Deeply purifies, helps regulate excess sebum and limit breakouts, without drying 35% Laurel

A single bar of soap is enough for your face, body, and hair. This is one of Aleppo soap's most practical advantages: it replaces shower gel, face cleanser, and, for many, shampoo. You can discover our authentic Aleppo soaps and compare the three ranges.

Problem skin: what Aleppo soap can and cannot do

This is the topic where precision is required. Aleppo soap is a hygiene product, not a medicine. It does not replace any treatment and does not make any pathology disappear. What it does is cleanse without adding aggression to already fragile skin — and for problem skin, that's far from insignificant.

Eczema and atopic skin

Laurel oil soothes itching and limits bacterial proliferation, while olive oil helps rebuild the skin barrier. The complete absence of fragrance and preservatives removes the main triggers of irritation present in conventional washing products from the equation. We have dedicated a full article to the subject: Aleppo soap and eczema, benefits and precautions.

Acne and oily skin

The 35% Laurel variety deeply cleanses without stripping the skin. It helps regulate excess sebum and limit the appearance of breakouts, while preserving the skin's natural balance — whereas many anti-acne cleansers dry out the skin so much that they cause an overproduction of sebum in reaction.

Psoriasis and fungal infections

For skin prone to psoriasis, the minimalist composition of Aleppo soap helps calm inflammation related to cleansing and can contribute to reducing redness. The natural antifungal properties of laurel oil also make it a valuable addition for the hygiene of skin prone to fungal infections. In both cases, it is a supportive measure, never a solution.

In case of a diagnosed skin condition, ask your dermatologist for advice before changing your washing product. For babies and young children, the pediatrician's advice remains the reference.

Beyond the body: face, hair, and minor wounds

For the face

Superfatted and additive-free, Aleppo soap can be used as a face cleanser morning and evening. It helps tighten pores and leaves the skin clean without the feeling of a film left by some cleansers. For sensitive skin, prefer Pure Olive or 20% Laurel, and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. The complete instructions, routine, and mistakes to avoid are in our guide Aleppo soap for the face.

As a gentle shampoo

Used on hair, Aleppo soap soothes sensitive or irritated scalps and helps reduce dandruff. It cleanses without being harsh and is particularly suitable for itchy scalps. Be aware, however: switching to solid soap requires an adaptation period and an acidic rinse. Everything is detailed in our guide Aleppo soap for hair.

After shaving and on small cuts

Its gentle antiseptic properties help clean scrapes and small shaving cuts, and its natural composition promotes clean healing by limiting superficial infections. This is a subtle use, but one that many of our customers adopt first.

Which Aleppo soap for which benefit?

If you're still undecided, the rule is simple.

  • Pure Olive — the most nourishing. For very dry, sensitive, reactive skin, and babies with pediatrician approval.
  • 20% Laurel — the balance. For normal to combination skin, daily use for the whole family, children aged three and up.
  • 35% Laurel — the most purifying. For oily, blemish-prone, or problem skin.

Frequently asked questions

What are the benefits of Aleppo soap?

It nourishes the skin with olive oil, purifies and soothes it with laurel oil, and cleanses without destroying the hydrolipidic film. Its four-ingredient composition makes it well-tolerated by sensitive skin, and a single bar replaces shower gel, face cleanser, and shampoo.

What is Aleppo soap used for?

For daily washing of the face and body, as a gentle shampoo, as shaving foam, and as an auxiliary treatment for dry or blemish-prone skin. The flakes from the same paste are also used to make homemade laundry detergent, a traditional use in Aleppo.

Does Aleppo soap dry out the skin?

No, but its pH is alkaline, like that of all genuine soaps. Some skin types may experience slight tightness during the first few uses as the skin adapts. Rinse thoroughly, do not let the soap sit on the skin, and choose Pure Olive if your skin is very dry. If tightness persists beyond two weeks, reduce frequency. We explain the role of pH in detail in what is the pH of Aleppo soap.

How long does it take to see effects?

Allow two to three weeks of regular use. The feeling of comfort after showering is noticeable within the first few days, but the effects on the appearance of the skin – cleansing of oily areas, soothing of redness – require the time of a full skin cycle.
